If you work in any office then you probably know what I'm talking about, and you've possibly done it yourself. What I am referring to is the act of replacing plain old English with marketing speak, or management speak, or business speak.
What Is It?

and ask yourself how many times you've heard phrases like "low hanging fruit", "boiling the ocean", "paradigm shift", etc.
So what we're talking about here is the idea that people feel the need to use these buzzwords to get a point across when they could have easily just said the same thing with fewer and less complicated words. Instead you hear sentences like "From a 60,000 foot level I think it is imperative that we remain adaptive, on the bleeding-edge and provide value-added services that will mitigate the need for a paradigm shift while empowering our customers to strive for Total Quality Control". I mean really, what the hell is that?
The problem is that when an executive or other high level 'leader' is talking this way, others may feel obliged to respond in the same manner. You want to be able to play the game so you use the same stupid words in every meeting and to be honest it makes you look good because you're validating what your boss is saying.
Next time your in a meeting bring a Buzzword Bingo
card with you and see how well you do. At least you can keep yourself entertained.
